How D2C brands cut COD returns with WhatsApp order confirmation

Cash-on-delivery orders that are never accepted cost shipping both ways. A simple WhatsApp confirmation step before dispatch catches most of them.

For many Indian online stores, a large share of orders are cash on delivery, and a good number of them are refused at the door. Every refused parcel costs forward and return shipping plus blocked stock.

The fix is simple: ask the customer to confirm the order on WhatsApp before you ship it.

How the flow works

  • The customer places a COD order on your store.
  • Your store sends a utility template through the Wapify API: order details with “Confirm order” and “Cancel” buttons.
  • If the customer taps Confirm, the order is tagged as confirmed and shipped.
  • If they cancel or do not reply within a set time, your team calls them or holds the order.

Why it works

Customers open WhatsApp messages far more than SMS or email. A one-tap confirmation filters out fake and impulse orders before they cost you shipping, and it gives genuine buyers confidence that the order is real.

Go further

Once the confirmation step is running, add:

  • Shipping and out-for-delivery updates so customers are home to receive the parcel.
  • An offer to switch to prepaid with a small discount.
  • Abandoned-cart reminders for customers who left without ordering.
