WhatsApp opt-in: how to collect permission the right way
Meta requires opt-in before you message customers. These simple methods collect it without hurting conversions.
Meta’s WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy says you may only message people who agreed to receive messages from your business on WhatsApp. Good opt-in is also good business: people who asked to hear from you read and reply far more.
Easy ways to collect opt-in
- A checkbox at checkout: “Send me order updates and offers on WhatsApp.”
- A chat link or QR code — a customer who messages you first has started the conversation.
- A website chat button or pop-up offering updates on WhatsApp.
- A Click-to-WhatsApp ad that starts a chat.
- Asking in an existing chat: “Would you like offers on WhatsApp? Reply YES.”
What a good opt-in says
Tell people clearly that the messages come on WhatsApp, from your business, and what kind of messages to expect. Keep a record of when and how each person opted in.
What to avoid
- Bought, rented or scraped number lists
- Adding numbers from group chats
- Pre-ticked boxes hidden in long terms
